2023: A look forward
As we depart from 2022, the aggressive expansion of technology - powered by an unmatched leap in computing power and artificial intelligence - has been remarkable. As 2023 kicks off, this tech is gradually being woven into our lives to expedite industries and shape a new future. I'm deeply invested in certain topics within this field which are pointing toward fascinating futures; here are just a few of my favorite areas that have me captivated.
AI Agents
Stable diffusion is an open-source project that allows anyone to generate an image using a text prompt. It was released only a few months ago and already millions of people have downloaded the source code and have been using it. This new type of technology is rapidly changing the way we think about creativity and what computers can be used for.
Already, there are exciting new tools and advancements with Stable Diffusion being released each day. Will we see real-time stable diffusion in 2023? Maybe! Once optimized and targeting a specific game we might see something like Minecraft rerendered by Stable Diffusion in real-time. With its capabilities, people have been able to create spectacular animations, movies, 3D images, and more. And it's only improving - in 2023 the tools will become even better!
Come 2023, we are likely to be met with AI programs that are even more proficient in understanding humans. In a revolution of roles, it will no longer be our job to learn how to talk to computers – instead, they'll understand us! In the near future, we will simply need to inform our devices of a task that needs doing - and soon enough artificial intelligence can take care of everything from finding us the best deals online, calculating our taxes, or assisting with homework. This changes the way we interact with computers completely, which consequently calls for a massive reconstruction of our workflows. I firmly believe that companies such as Apple or Microsoft will soon release an AI-powered assistant with capabilities to use a computer and mobile device just like us. If this isn't accomplished by 2023, it won't be long before we have access to open-source options of similar quality.
Once Artificial Intelligence has attained the capacity to use a device with analogous precision as humans and can comprehend us similarly, this AI will keep advancing its knowledge while attaining new skills. By connecting AIs, rather than using apps or websites, we will be able to have more comprehensive interactions with them. To facilitate this kind of technology, these AI agents must have access and control over a specific API (Application Programming Interface). In other words, this would allow our Artificial Intelligence systems to operate much more efficiently.
Have you seen Apple's Shortcuts feature yet? It allows users to assign specific tasks for Siri that can be completed through native apps. For instance, if you have the Starbucks app installed on your phone, simply say 'order me a coffee' and voila! As AI technology continues to evolve, it will begin managing our digital lives so we can spend more quality time living in the real world without needing any extra information or accounts – no forms filling out or tracking of logins required. Sounds amazing right? Let AI take care of everything while you kick back and relax!
Decentralization and Privacy
Although promising, I'm hesitant to say much about blockchain technology due to the prevalence of scams and lack of understanding around it. In my opinion, blockchain is best utilized as a tool for decentralization rather than an exchange currency. Despite its potential applications with AI integration, I'm not sure where it's going in 2023. There is so much money wrapped up in it, it might be one of the biggest gambles for the year.
Privacy is a huge problem with all of our data online being used to target us with advertisements. With an AI agent we have under our control we have ownership of our data and can use our AI to protect our information and who can access it. It will continue to be an ongoing fight to secure and own your data, and keep it from advertisers who wanted to use it to sell you things. Advertisers will have to find a way to negotiate with a person's AI agent so the person is compensated for seeing the ad.
Our online security will remain vulnerable. With deepfakes and data privacy challenges on the rise, advertising firms will continue honing their tools and targeted strategies. As a result of this, we may start seeing personalized ads featuring videos that address you with your name or other information they've gathered about you! Furthermore, celebrities might send custom messages directly to each consumer urging them to purchase a product or service from their brand - making for an even more personified interaction between companies, brands, and people by 2023.
Computing
As the microprocessor industry continues to expand, fierce competition among countries is growing. The United States has announced that numerous chip companies will be arriving in the US due to concerns about technology leakage into foreign countries like China. Neuromorphic processors are gaining traction and could potentially revolutionize AI capabilities on small devices such as phones. Even though these chips won't become available for several years down the road, powerful AI models produced by large tech firms can already be executed on miniature gadgets today!
IBM is propelling quantum computing to the next level, and there's no telling how far it can take us. With their resourceful technology breakthroughs, an industry like healthcare could be completely transformed for good. Think about it: with a quantum computer capable of scanning your DNA individually, customized medicine tailored just for you could become reality! We likely won't experience this by 2023, but I'm thrilled to check back in one year from now and see what advancements have been made since then!
Mixed Realities
Although cellular phones, laptops, and desktops are still the dominant forms of personal computing today, they are gradually transitioning into spatial computing. From an individual's point of view, a computer is merely a screen and input device; however, our ultimate monitor is our eyes (with the brain quickly catching up). Soon enough we'll be entering into this new era of spatially aware devices!
As an advocate of Augmented Reality, I foresee some fun advancements by 2023. With the introduction of Meta's Quest Pro, more developers can create for mixed reality and due to this influx in development, we'll soon be met with even more innovative experiences. There will be a lot of new hardware launched next year as well - perhaps Apple headsets or a cluster of other unexpected models - enabling us to start thinking about spacial computing and how it can revolutionize our interactions with computers!
In 1990, Edward Tufte wrote "Envisioning Information," which has become a renowned source on how to convey information effectively. He crafted graceful strategies for transforming the multidimensional world into two-dimensional formats suitable for print and digital platforms. To reach success in the world of spatial computing, we must develop a novel comprehension of data. We have to take an adventurous voyage into this multi-dimensional universe and discover imaginative techniques to comprehend its intricacies. With AI's support, what is waiting for us looks like an entirely new world.
Brace yourselves for a game-changing shift! Companies such as Humane are on the cusp of introducing a new product that could supplant conventional smartphones. From what I've found, companies are considering using AI-assisted projection technology instead of screens. Fancy having a wearable gadget that can detect surfaces and project data without needing glasses or displays? It is certainly an intriguing concept I am eager to witness!
